Home Security Systems - Tips from SecurityDirect.ie
Lets have a look at the main options for Burglar Alarm systems.

Dummy Alarms

This is the cheapest option out of the 3. It looks like a security system but doest actually work, however it may deter potential burglars.
This should be a last resort as most burglars will be aware of dummy systems and how to recognise them.
If you are on a tight budget, this will be your best option.

We sell the HKC Sabb Bell Box to customers looking for a deterrent. This can later be connected to the alarm system when its installed.

Non-Monitored Alarm System

This is probably the most common alarm system installed in Ireland.
It essentially means that when your alarm system is triggered, it will sound the sirens & strobes, but doesn't actually contact anyone to let them know the alarm has been activated.

GSM / TEXT Dialler

If you have a non-monitored system, you may wish to add on a device which will contact you or a designated person(s) when the alarm is activated.
This can be transmitted via Alarm Text Message  or can be a voice call.
Please see our recent post regarding the Text Messaging Service

Monitored Alarm System

This is the most expensive of the options as a monitoring fee must be paid annually.
This fee ensures that your home alarm is monitored 24/7. In the event of an alarm activation, the central station will be made aware of it and will contact the keyholders or the Gardai if required.

How to ensure you're secure?

  1. Ensure you set the alarm even when you're in the house. Most alarm systems can be 'part-set' so you can freely walk around the house while its on.
  2. Have your Security System serviced regularly,
  3. If you have P.I.R (Passive Infra Red Detectors) ensure there is nothing obstructing their view such as cobwebs,
  4. If you external bell isn't out of easy reach of criminals. Get a metal cage installed around it to ensure it isn't easy to remove.
  5. Insurance - check if you can avail of a discount with your insurance company,
  6. Always ensure you lock your doors & windows.
  7. Check if your installed is registered with the Private Security Authority.
  8. Try and avail of any Text Alerts in your area. Meath Crime Prevention page offers a wealth of information around the Meath area.

How often do you change the Battery for your House Alarm?

How often do you change the Battery for your House Alarm?

House alarm systems include rechargeable batteries to ensure that when there is an issue with the power supply, whether that be nature or intentional, that your alarm system still functions.

Your intruder alarm system is only as strong as the weakest point, so ensuring you have a good backup battery is vital.

Can I change a low amp battery for a higher ampage battery?
Most residential alarm systems use 12V  7ah Batteries, you can use a higher amp battery, but not a higher voltage battery.
Please ensure that if you are increasing the amps of your battery that it will fit in the alarm control panel. If you have any doubts about this, don't hesitate to give us a call.

How long will my battery last?

There is 2 factors here; How long will it last when the power goes and how long should it be before I need to replace it?
Most manufacturers would say the life span is 3-5 years. They are constantly being trickle charged in the event that the mains power fails.
Its important that your alarm system is serviced regularly to ensure that the battery is holding it charge.
The most common house alarm battery which we sell is the 12V 7Ah House Alarm Battery by Yuasa
If you require any information for batteries for any application, don't hesitate to give us a call.

Lost your Gate Controller?

Have you lost the controller for your Electric Gates?

We've been supplying Electric Gates in Ireland for over 10 years and one of the main questions we get asked by customers is what's the alternative to constantly replacing the key fobs for their Electric Gates.

We've been recommending our Automatic Gate Contoller for the last few years and its an excellent device which eliminates the need for gate fobs / buttons totally.

It uses a GSM Controller to open / close your gates so all you need is a phone.

ESIM110 automatic gate controller (GSM switch) is used to open gates, lift road barriers or turn on the electronic device remotely over GSM network. Using this device You can also remotely turn on or off the security system, receive SMS messages or calls about choosen system activities.
Calling on the number of the SIM card inserted in Esim010 the system checks if the number of the caller is recorded in the memory. If the number exists in the database, the system rejects the call and turns on the relay for the determined period. If the number of the caller is not recorded, the contacts of the relay are not connected.
Don't hesitate to give us a call to discuss your requirements further.

Feel Secure with SecurityDirect.ie

Leave Your Security Worries in The Capable Hands Of Security Direct

It’s really hard to feel secure nowadays, even in your own homes there are still impending danger. In the

schools of your children, how can you be assured of their safety? As you walk down the street on your

way to work, in your office or just being in a supermarket—you can never say that you are truly safe.

There are different kinds of danger looming anywhere in society, so it is really wise to be vigilant at this

time and age. After all, it is always better to be safe than sorry, as the famous line goes.

For that reason, we at Security Direct offers our products and services to help you create a secure

atmosphere whether in your home or business establishment. Even amidst the economic problem,

when families and companies are cutting back on costs to save, they still continue to invest in reliable

security system like CCTV cameras, electric gates and burglar alarm for their homes and offices. It has

been often said that fear of crime is greater than fear itself, so anything that makes you feel safe and

secure generally is why we are here for.

Your Safety Device Options

There are a lot of security devices available today that are all intended to perform best in specific

circumstances, they may have many different functions but really have a common purpose, to deter any

unauthorized access to facilities or homes and protect your or personnel and property against damage

and harm.

A single security device can be quite costly but is it worth it? Probably, especially if you think of the

possibilities a single CCTV camera can do for your business establishment. It would beat having two

security guards on the lookout for burglars and dishonest employees. Also, a CCTV can greatly reduce

the chances of crimes from ever happening since having a camera boosts the probability of the criminals

being caught.

You can also opt for a burglar alarm system that alerts you of an intruder in your homes, offices or

possessions. However, this type of device is commonly used in homes and retail stores that aren’t open

24-hours. It alerts anyone attempting to gain entrance and often than not, will frighten away potential

burglar with its noise and lights. The only limitation for a burglar alarm system is it isn’t very effective in

large areas like in a commercial building. Commonly, it is installed with another security component.

Another type of a security device is the electronic gates, typically used in residential properties, which

prevent intruders to trespass on the premises of your property. It can also be a precautionary measure

since electronic gates lets you avoid having any close encounter with an unknown and potentially

dangerous individual. Imagine having to open the gate personally to a stranger or having to go down

your car to manually open the gate. It can be a very risky situation, and one that you can avoid by

installing an electric gate in your property.

Safety is a big concern for everyone nowadays and we at Security Direct can easily help you choose the

safety device that best suits your needs. So, hurry and call Security Direct at +353 469010000 for your

home or office security needs and get the much needed peace of mind you deserve.

Vacant Property Protection

Currently there are a large number of commercial and residential properties vacant or lying idle, so there is a requirement to protect them from theft, vandalism and arson.
The Epir Gsm device provides a cost effective solution to this growing problem.

CCTV Bullet Cameras V CCTV Dome Cameras

The difference between bullet & dome CCTV cameras?

As far as camera functionality is concerned, bullet and dome cameras are extremely similar.  So really what you’re looking for is what will fit best with your particular application and what your preferences are. Bullet cameras protrude outward, sort of like the barrel of a gun, where dome cameras have that circular “dome” shape.  I’m sure you’ve seen both types of surveillance cameras as both are quite popular.

Range

If you are looking for a long-range camera, you’ll probably want to go with a bullet camera, as the housing of the dome camera tends to limit the size of the lens.  Typically, the longer the lens, the longer the range.  Please keep in mind however that I say “typically”, as in the tendency is that bullet cameras see further.  Some domes incorporate a lens with an extensive range, like this vandal proof dome from Veilux.

Environment

If you are looking for an indoor camera, dome cameras are far more common.  They are less intrusive, and most people agree they are far more elegant and sleek, and will flow more seamlessly with the décor of the household or building.
Bullet cameras are great for outdoors because they are usually weatherproof (make sure you check theIP Ratings of the camera to discover its environmental protection).  And, as mentioned above, they have a longer range, which is more necessary when viewing a parking lot or other large area.

Overt vs. Covert

Overt Bullet Camera
Bullet Camera to Discourage Vandalism
If you are looking to discourage theft or vandalism, then a bullet camera might be the appropriate choice, as they are a bit more obvious and visible to passers-by.  Dome cameras are more difficult to spot, so if you’re in need of something more covert in nature then go with a dome.  Not only do they not stick out as much as bullets, but the dome housing will hide where the camera itself is pointing (the field of view), and therefore what you are capturing.

Cost

As far as the cost is concerned, bullet and dome cameras are fairly similar.  That said, the bullet cameras can be a little more cost efficient since they come with only the camera itself and the mount, where the domes come with the housing and extra parts.  This is merely a generality, as there are some more expensive domes, as there are bullets that are less expensive.

Mounting/Installation

Bullets are usually easier to mount and install than domes, as they are point-and-shoot.  Attach them to the wall and they are good to go.  Dome cameras aren’t necessarily more difficult to mount, but are more likely to require dismounting to adjust the direction.  This is something to keep in mind.

Durability

Dome cameras win the durability test by a landslide, at least the ones that are referred to as “vandal proof”.  Vandal proof domes are housed in durable enclosures made to withstand anything from shaking to vandalism, which is something to consider if yours is an application where the camera is easily accessible, such as a low ceiling.
Conversely, bullet cameras can easily be damaged or knocked out of position with a rock or stick.

Cosmetics

As mentioned above, dome cameras are more likely to fit with your current décor.  The dome-shape makes them more elegant and less intrusive than bullets.  The overall aesthetics make domes a popular surveillance solution.
Dome cameras also have a cleaner, more seamless look due to their ability to hide/protect the wiring, whereas bullets will often have wiring slightly exposed.  Again, it is important to keep in mind, this is not true in ALL cases, as some bullets will not have exposed wiring and some domes will.

CCTV Camera Guidelines

CCTV Cameras

  • Range
  • Resolution
  • Day / Night capabilities
  • Size / Shape
  • System connectivity

What questions should you ask before buying your CCTV Kit?

  • Indoor / Outdoor - Do you require an internal / external CCTV camera?
  • Resolution - How important is the quality of the image to you? Do you just want to see if someone enters a general area or do you need to be able to read number plates?
  • Lighting - What level of lighting is there in the area where the CCTV camera is to be positioned
  • Distance - Do you require to zoom into an area or will a general view suffice

Indoor CCTV vs. Outdoor CCTV

Dome Cameras

Dome Cameras are normally a compact discrete design. The bracket normally allows for huge versitility in mounting applications. We sell both Indoor and Outdoor Cameras in our store. Please call if you do not see something which suits your requirements.

Box Cameras

Box Cameras offer the versatility of being able to change lens to accommodate many applications whether its wide angles, or narrow zoom points. Although designed for use indoors, with the addition of an external housing they can be mounted outdoors. Please call / email for more information

Hidden Cameras

We sell a wide variety of hidden or "Spy Camers" as they are often referred. To find the cameras which best suits your needs, please contact someone in sales.

IR - Infrared Illumination

Day/Night Cameras

Day Nights Cameras are the most commonly used cameras today as they utilize colour during the day and automatically switch to black and white at night or when light levels reduce.Distance

Camera Type
Different situations or applications require different cameras.
Its always recomended to go for Vandal Proof Bullets / Dome Cameras when installing outside CCTV Systems. Hidden Camers are normally pin-hole PCB camers which are installed unsuspectingly in Smoke Alarms / Alarm Clocks / PIRs Etc.
Bullet Cameras
Bullet Camera can be mounted on walls / celings / poles. They type of bullet camers will depend on whether its for indoor / outdoor applications.

In areas with no light at all, IR Cameras can be installed and can still capture High Res images. Most modern camers have IR LEDs which are situated around the lens and emit a light which the image sensor on the camera can capture. This camera allows to see up to 60m in darknessBullet Camera 650TVL Long Distance

For most CCTV installs, distance inst an issue for 90% of the cameras to be installed. Some cases where distance becomes an issue is when customers want to focus in on cars waiting at the entrance gates.
In general, a small focal lenght will provide for your requirements as it will give you wider coverage. An Example belowDifferent Focal Lengths
